The BRICS: Between motivations and strategic objectives

The BRICS are at the heart of global geopolitical and geostrategic news. Since Tuesday, the member countries of this organization have been meeting in Johannesburg for the summit of the alliance. Sergei Lavrov, the head of Russian diplomacy, spoke about the raison d’être of the organization, a few hours before the opening of the summit.

The BRICS want to end Western domination

Global geopolitics as we know it is taking a monumental slap. Indeed, the latter seems to be undergoing a major upheaval under the impetus of the BRICS countries.

It is an open secret that these countries are not satisfied with the current course of the world. We see these States move their pawns to try to give impetus to a new direction that is more beneficial to the States.

The least we can say is that their strategy and their actions have many adherents. We have thus seen a wave of successive states asking to join the BRICS. This alliance will contribute, in the opinion of several experts, to putting an end to the hegemony of the dollar.

Some specialists doubt the relevance of this perspective. However, the possibilities of the latter materializing are great. In any case, the BRICS no longer hide their desire to put an end to Western domination carried by the United States.

Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, clearly reaffirmed this ambition. Speaking shortly before the conference opened on Tuesday August 22, the official said: “The international development model based on exploiting the resources of the global majority for the benefit of the golden billion is hopelessly outdated. It does not reflect the aspirations of all humanity”.

That is why “Russia and a number of other countries are steadily reducing their dependence on the US dollar.” This, with a clear objective: to promote international relations based on cultural diversity and “ensuring the development of all”.

The BRICS strategy to achieve this

To materialize their ambitions, the member countries of the BRICS rely essentially on their demographic assets. Because, it should be remembered, the BRICS represent 40% of the world’s population for around 31.5% of the world’s GDP.

With such potential, the BRICS are making the economy and currency their top priority. They thus intend to strengthen the effectiveness of the Development Bank and the Foreign Exchange Reserve Fund. This will be done mainly by improving payment mechanisms that may involve cryptos. Without neglecting to increase the importance of national currencies in settlements between Member States.
